Day one commenced at MediaCityUK’s car park—hardly the prestigious setting of the Tour de France’s simultaneous launch. I had meticulously packed bags containing clothing, sleeping gear, electronics, and provisions, which felt heavy when attached to the bicycle. The substantial elevation ahead weighed on my mind.

My fiancée Katie assisted with final preparations before departure. The journey began over a bridge past the Imperial War Museum, then onto canal paths leading east from Manchester. About twenty minutes in, I realized I’d forgotten to activate my ride tracking.

The canal routes smoothly transitioned through quieter areas, passing the Etihad Stadium before entering genuine countryside. The initial climbs offered Manchester vistas, followed by a challenging descent along an erosion-ravaged path.

A Mechanical Crisis

Descending into Dobcross, the front brake cable loosened, rendering it inoperable. With added weight from gear, the rear brake alone proved insufficient for safe stopping. Rather than risk a collision on the approaching main road, I deliberately bailed, sustaining wrist soreness but preserving the bicycle’s integrity.

Continuing Forward

After repairs and sustenance, I tackled the Pennine Bridleway’s double-digit gradient on loose terrain, eventually pushing the bike upward. A fellow walker provided companionship during this section. Subsequent riding crossed Saddleworth Moor, delivered a rapid descent, and led through Rochdale before reaching Burnley—my mother’s birthplace—in rapid succession.

Into Yorkshire

Upon entering Yorkshire, frustration emerged regarding steep road construction. Music accompanied the physical fatigue. I paused to share photos via Slack with supporters at the BBC.

Route through Yorkshire

After the final major climb, I descended into Ingleton seeking dinner. Unable to secure restaurant seating (the Eat Out to Help Out scheme was still active), I assembled provisions from the local Co-Op before climbing four miles to my first campsite. A hot shower, meal, and view provided satisfaction. I contacted Katie before achieving broken but adequate sleep.
